Life is like a game of poker…

Poker Cards

Everyone has heard of the saying “Life is like a game of poker”…

I am fascinated by poker and the more I learn about the game of poker the more I can relate it to EVERYTHING!

This is my first ever blog, so I am entering a new world where I can ramble on about poker and how I relate it to everything in my life.  The same principles of success in poker can be applied to almost everything.  I think it is a fascinating subject and I hope that you do too!

I am looking forward to sharing my thoughts on poker and life with the world.

Here are some poker quotes that reflect how similar life is to poker…

“Poker is a microcosm of all we admire and disdain about capitalism and democracy.  It can be rough-hewn or polished, warm or cold, charitable and caring, or hard and impersonal, fickle and elusive, but ultimately it is fair, and right, and just.”  ~Lou Krieger

“Poker is the game closest to the western conception of life, where life and thought are recognized as intimately combined, where free will prevails over philosophies of fate or of chance, where men are considered moral agents and where – at least in the short run – the important thing is not what happens but what people think happens.”  ~John Luckacs

I thought life was like a box or chocolates. :-)

I totally agree with you, although sometimes a stretch, I can also relate most aspects of life to poker.

Like the blog so far, hope you keep it up!

hey julz. Great blog btw. Just wanted to add something…. Its just basically about when your short stacked or “when the chips are down” you push all in cause you’ve got nothing to lose, in life if you’ve got nothing to lose you do what ever it takes to get back what you lost. Just one of my veiws poker being like life.

    lots of love kizy83 xx

Very nice article, here’s a few things I am learning.

In poker and in life there are always difficulties and opportunities. Sometimes there are more difficulties than opportunities but there are always going to be times where the opportunities outweigh the difficulties, it’s a constant balancing act. Those who focus on how difficult their lives are or how they keep being dealt the losing hand will miss current and future opportunities because they are simply not looking for them. The successful people in poker and in life are those who keep a focused positive mental attitude during adversity and capitalize in the times of opportunity because they know that it’s only a matter of time before their cards turn bad again.

It’s a matter of planning ahead and knowing what you want, knowing it’s not always going to be easy but looking for and finding ways UNTIL your goals are acheived regardless of the obstacles in your way. The more fundamental tools you have at your disposal the more effectively you will know how to handle these obstacles and also the more you will be to make the most of your winning hands. In poker these fundamentals would be things like knowledge of the odds, concentration, hand reading skills, people reading skills, patience and confidence to name a few. There are so many basic, yet intertwined, fundamental concepts and this is why a continuous learning process is absolutely fundamental and why a regular revision of the basic principles is so important.

I have a friend that was worried becaus he just realized that success is not guarantee in life, and that if you do exactly what you are supposed to do, you may fail in life, I agree that is true, but it is not a chance of luck or 50/50 percent that everything is going to be good or bad, is like having a pocket As in your hand, no one can tell you 100% sure you are going to win that hand, but you have to use what you have in your hand and minimize the risks, you have to increase your posibilities, you have to use what you have and increase that 50% chances to win the hand, not because there is a chance you are going to loose you dont play the hand right? not only with a pair of As, but with everything you may get, no one is going to tell that if following a certain path your are surely going to succeed, that is no reason to fell down or to beleive everything is luck, you have to play your chances, smartly, and always remember, there is always a next hand to be dealt for you.

I hope you agree with me.

    thanks
